We all have needs…

Hello all,

This evening finds me productive… I’m announcing my first show that features me as the main performer since November of last year. I’ll be playing a solo show at New City on tuesday, May 1st. This will be the first of many… ’cause I’m fuckin’ BACK, suckers!

With that, I’m on the lookout for a rhythm section, bass player & drummer who are capable of singing harmonies. Applicants must not be repressing & self medicating any traumatic experience or identity crisis… at least not with hard drugs. Slow learners, busy-bodies, and people who can’t play quietly & with dynamics need not apply. Drop me a line at fatdavejohnston@gmail.com

On another note…when I started redesigning this site for more functionality I decided to try and be a little more personal when the occasion suited me…

Well, the not-so-humble plot of land that I have graced for the past <30 years has decided to elect a new bunch mutants to run the province for a while and see if they can make short work of the surplus money they have… but rather than discussing real issues (since balancing the budget and talking about healthcare is not enough) they’ve decided that alienating homosexuals and people of various ethnic origins makes for better news… so the only comment I will make on this ridiculous farce is this:

“If conservative families don’t agree with homosexuality then they should stop having gay kids.”

New directions…

New direction

New trajection.

Nude erection.

That’s right folks. As music progresses at The Fat Dave camp, it also regresses. It finds more traditional ways of making music with the same old bitterness and dreck that you’ve all come to love and admire, and is chopped finely and sprinkled evenly with the same aggressive approach to music making that makes Fat Dave music what it is.

It is taking more of a turn for the traditional, though… as stated.

I’m currenntly compiling songs for an album for real this time. Smoother and more accessible than the Fat Dave Crime Wave and Ol’ Smashy have been in the past, and this album will be collected in a way that compliments the New Orleans folk-blues feel…

… Recording to tape… Mastering to tape… Mastering to lacquer, and pressing to vinyl.

An album that is (God-willing) completely computer free.

We’re a ways off from talking much about that, but I have completed and submitted my entry for the All-Alberta Song Contest, which is partly what has kicked this recording project into gear and got the wheels moving. It’s casual and involed simultaneously, and I’ll be booking shows here & there to put some miles on these new songs and throwing my name around as a solo artist… which is a foreign idea for most at this point.

But I’m not fucking around.

Get psych’d.

Hey all…

This site is moving…

It’s being hosted (under fatdave.com) by thirtytwenty group and will feature more personal blog postings and solo music from Fat Dave Johnston. It will be a merging of the “Ol’ Smashy” website, as well as the under-maintained Fat Dave blog entitled “crash course in mind blowing” which will become more active, and have more content related to other facets of Fat Dave.

I’ve been off the computer for months. It’s time to unload.

Lots has happened.

Get psyched.

It’s been a while…

Hey all,

It’s been some time since the last update… So I’ll recap the past few months by saying that I’ve completely lost my mind and everything is awesome.

We’re playing a show next Saturday, November 5th with The British Columbians and Mark Davis at New City in Edmonton.

We’re also in the process of working in a couple of back-up singers into the band now, Alice Kos and Karen Struik. Things are going quite well on that front, and they’ll be joining us at New City.

Of course changes like that tend to bring on talk of recording and yadda-yadda-yadda… So… That’ll happen this spring if you’re lucky. In the mean time it’s almost time to drop another E.P. on the public pretty soon… So you’ll see some info pertaining to that in the coming months.

Get psych’d.
Show up at New City next week.

Thx
F.D.

New Noise

Hey Ol’ Smasher’s…

Today, even the elite members of the Ol’ Smashy Facebook & Twitter fanclubs have lost access to free downloads of the 2 tracks that are securely hidden on the B-side of the “Cryin’ Over You” 7-inch, but the A-side (containing a song ironically named “Cryin’ Over You“) is now available for free download to Everyone.

Along with that song, we’re also throwing out a previously unreleased song from the same recording session entitled “Until I Come Runnin’ Back.”

Ol’ Smashy is feeling mighty generous today. These 2 songs are available for streaming and download in the lovely blue & white box located on the right-hand side of your computer screen.

It’s time to get psych’d.

xo… F.D.

“Crop Circles” Tour 2011

Hey all,

We’re booking a tour around the perimeter of the prairies for some unknown reason, and we’ve got a couple holes in the ol’ schedule… if you can take a look and help us hook something up, please shoot me a message at fatdavejohnston@gmail.com.

Thanks!

Out of the woods…

Hey people,

So with our first release party as Ol’ Smashy under our belts despite one glaring technical complication, we can resume working out new songs for a record to be released at a later date.

We’ve still got more songs we’ll be tricking out as we go, and we’ll be going on a short tour in July that will lead us up to a closing set at The Sasquatch Gathering at Pembina River. Tour dates are being updated as they are confirmed, so check the tour dates section of this site to see what’s going on.

In other words…  it’s business as usual down at the Ol’ Smashy camp.
